PHOTOCHROMIC UV SENSITIVITY
The UV Safety Thermometer Card incorporates an ultra-violet sensitive area that changes colour through shades of mauve depending on the UV strength outdoors.
UV Intensity Card
Product Specifications: UV Safety Thermometer Card
Four mauve control panels of varying colour strength loosely approximate to the UV strength represented by the colour in the UV sensitive circle. Even on a cloudy day.
Card size 54 x 85mm
Face the safety card towards the sun for 10 seconds, and then check the colour of the UV sensitive panel against the control panel colours beside it, to see how strong the UV is.
The specially formulated ultra violet sensitive ink becomes a darker colour as the strength of ultra violet increases. This reaction occurs also through cloud because UV rays can still penetrate to your skin through cloud. On summer or winter holidays, ultra violet also reflects off snow, water and sand.
Serious sun burn, especially when young, can lead to skin cancer later in life, therefore it is wise to understand how strong the ultra violet is, and what factor level of sun cream to use for optimum protection.
UV radiation is part of the natural energy produced by the sun. UV light has shorter wavelengths than visible light, so your eyes can’t see UV, but your skin can feel it.
UV exposure can damage your skin, from premature wrinkles to dangerous skin cancer. Damage from UV exposure is cumulative and increases your skin cancer risk over time.
UV exposure that leads to sunburn has been shown to play a strong role in developing melanoma skin cancer. Recent research shows that the UV rays that damage skin can also alter a gene that suppresses tumours, raising the risk of sun-damaged skin cells developing into skin cancer.
The danger posed by UV radiation can be greatly reduced by using sun cream, wearing sensible clothing and hat, and staying out of the strongest sun and UV particularly in the several hours either side of midday.

Ultra violet from the sun and its damaging effects are now an increasing concern for all. No one is more at risk than children. Even one serious sunburn experienced by a child can create the risk of skin cancer later in life and UV rays penetrate through cloud with just as much potential to burn skin. At higher altitudes or beside water, the effects of UV rays are much increased. Having a UV indicator, from our range of baby safety temperature thermometer and indicators, is a good reminder to check UV, and a sensible addition to any summer’s day or holiday.
The UV card and UV watch indicates the level of UV exposure and provides a simple way to check this. A UV sensitive area on each will change colour becoming darker as UV levels increase.
